The nose, in particular, is one of the most important organs that form this golden ratio in terms of its shape and structure. The common dream of many women and men is to have a beautiful and attractive looking face. However, a nose that is congenitally deformed or has been deformed as a result of an accident can cast a shadow over this dream.

Nowadays, the number of patients who apply for plastic surgery in order to feel comfortable in terms of aesthetics and to be happier when looking in the mirror is undeniable. Of course, there may be people who have had plastic surgery but still have nasal problems, deformities and continue to have aesthetic concerns. This is where revision rhinoplasty , or corrective surgery, comes into play.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is an operation performed on patients who have undergone plastic surgery but have structural and functional complaints about their nose. In addition to physical problems, many people who have undergone plastic surgery often experience an inability to breathe healthily. In nose surgeries, it is easier to intervene in the anatomical structure, but it may be more difficult to know the condition of the nasal tissues. For this reason, surgical interventions to be performed on the patient for the first time are very important. Aesthetic nose surgeries should be planned with the patient under the supervision of a specialist physician. Patients who will undergo revision nose surgery should be more careful. A second operation performed by non-specialists may lead to irreparable results.

So When Should Patients Have Revision Surgery?

First of all, patients should not rush into revision surgeries. Swelling and bruising on the face after the first aesthetic surgery may prevent the new shape of the nose from being seen. A period of 6 months to 1 year should be waited for the adjustment made to the nose to settle. If there is still concern about the nose afterwards, a specialist physician can be consulted. It should not be forgotten that the success rate of any intervention made before this period will be low. In addition, many patients think that the desired shape can be given to the nose in revision surgeries. Contrary to popular belief, in revision rhinoplasty, only the shaping made in the first surgical intervention can be corrected.

In revision rhinoplasty, corrections can be made for droopy and upturned noses. In addition, interventions are possible for nasal dorsum that is under- or over-removed. Revision surgeries are not simple surgical interventions. Because there may have been changes in the support point, cartilage or bone structure of the patient’s nose after previous operations. In such cases, the specialist physician may need new cartilage grafts to reshape the nose. Revision procedures can be performed by taking cartilage from the ear, rib or other parts of the body. Instead, alloplastic (artificial) materials are rarely preferred.

Techniques Used

Two different techniques are used in revision rhinoplasty. If the patient’s nose is damaged and the correction is extensive, the open technique is applied, if there are only problems on the bridge of the nose, the closed technique is applied. Whether the open or closed method is used in revision surgeries, the main purpose is to correct the nose properly without losing its naturalness and to eliminate any intranasal problems or breathing problems. As in all aesthetic surgeries, satisfactory results can only be achieved in revision rhinoplasty with the intervention of a specialist and experienced physician.
